In Sweden, as in most Nordic countries, the taxes are high, the welfare state is well funded and the gap between rich and poor is much, much smaller than in the UK.

In addition they have not adopted the american consumerist ethic as much as english speaking countries have so they are not always trying to "keep up with the Jones's".

Also I think it's fair to say that their education system is more concerned with developing the individual as a person, whereas in the UK education is geared around producing potential employees.

A person can change from a healthy lifestyle to an unhealthy one (drinking, smoking, drug-use, promiscuity, poor diet, etc.). Such a change in lifestyle *could* cause long-run decreases in public health (car accidents, risky surgeries, clogging up emergency rooms if the unhealthy has no insurance, not paying medical bills, depriving emergency rooms the capability to purchase contemporary equipment at the expense of patients' health)…
